Anticipating an Awesome 2017

It’s there, right around the corner.  The future.  A new year, one that I intend to turn into something awesome, and I WILL make it happen!paper-airplanes-logo

I hear your questions, your doubts, your snide laughter of disbelief.  How can I know it will be awesome?  I mean, who can predict the future?  (2016 taught us that, if nothing else!)

Simple.  I can make the future into anything I want it to be by following one rule.

Our good buddies at Merriam-Webster define wisdom as the combination of, “…knowledge…insight…judgment.”  Taken together as a whole, wouldn’t that be a wonderful year?

BUT – is this open to interpretation?  And oh-by-the-way, wouldn’t it be hard work?

Well duh, of course this isn’t going to be easy.  I mean, I will have to:

  • Be in the moment
  • Approach with curiosity
  • Experience learning
  • Treat others with dignity
  • Live with passion
  • Act with joy
  • Reflect with humility

If you’re paying close attention to the phrases, you’ll see a pattern.  They begin with “me” stuff – my attention to the world around me.  Then the focus transitions to external influencers and activities.  I wind up with how I choose (yes, it’s a choice) to respond.

To get to this point, tools help me remember.  A card taped to my bathroom mirror holds these seven points.  Ditto to one propped on my desk, in my daily journal as a bookmark, tucked in my wallet, pasted on my dashboard, and on the table next to my favorite reading chair.  (I draw the line at the fridge…)  I can’t NOT see these reminders multiple times a day.

And despite reminders, we often forget.  It’s too easy to get caught up in the maelstrom of craziness we call life.  Get mad at the driver in front of you in bad traffic or the person with 22 items in the 10 item checkout lane at the store.  Spend your meeting with your boss with half a mind on the problem you have at home, then waste an evening wondering what your boss meant by that comment during the meeting because you missed the cues.  Miss the special moment with your loved one because you were checking your phone/social media/email.

And look forward to an amazing and fulfilling 2017!!!
